Implants

Are there any age limitations for dental implants?

Please be informed that any person at any age can have dental implants as long as there is enough bone available in which to place the implants. See the page dental implants procedures.

How long do Dental Implants last?
Implants generally last 10-20 years which depends on the location of the implant and patient compliance with oral hygiene and dental visits. Because molars receive more stress and wear and tear, these implants typically do not last as long as implants located at the front of your mouth.

What is implant dentistry?
Implant dentistry is the branch of dentistry that involves installing an artificial tooth into a patient's jaw in order to replace or restore a missing tooth. See page

What are the benefits of dental implants?
Dental implants look and feel like your own teeth. When teeth are missing, the surrounding bone begins to shrink and eventually your jawbone will recede. Dental implants can prevent deterioration of the jawbone caused by loss of teeth, and your face will retain its natural shape.

What might be some factors that would prevent me from being an implant candidate?
There are some medical factors that might prevent a person from being a good candidate for dental implants. Some of these may be uncontrolled diabetes, chemotherapy or radiation therapy, parathyroid disorders, blood disorders, rare bone disorders or bone marrow cancer. Some physical factors may include insufficient or poor quality bone, low sinuses or nerve bundles.

How do Dental Implants work?
Because implants fuse to your jawbone, they provide stable support for artificial teeth. Dentures and bridges mounted to implants won't slip or shift in your mouth. This is an important benefit when you are eating or speaking. It is a secure fit that helps the dentures and bridges - as well as individual crowns placed over implants. It feels more natural than conventional bridges or dentures.

Is dental implant surgery painful?

No. An effective local anesthetic is used during the surgery so that you do not have any discomfort during the placement of the implants. The mild discomfort you might experience after surgery can be controlled with medications.
See page

When is a single tooth implant used?
These are usuallly used in people who are missing one or more teeth. An implant is surgically placed in an opening that is made by your dentist in the jawbone. After the implant integrates (attaches) to your bone, it acts as a new root for the crown that will be replacing your missing tooth.

What should I expect after treatment?
Dental implants will require the same care as your natural teeth. In order to keep your implant healthy, you have to do proper brushing and flossing each day! See page
