Athletic Mouthguards
What is the importance of wearing mouthguards?
Mouthguards should be a part of every athlete's uniform. They are as important as knee pads, helmets and other athletic protective equipment.
They protect the teeth, lips, gums and tongue. They also can prevent children from concussions and jaw fractures. The majority of trauma to the mouth occur when athletes do not wear mouthguards, especially in unorganized sports activities.
There is quite a list of sports for which mouthguards are recommended: Acrobatics, baseball, bicycling, boxing, field events, field hockey, football, gymnastics, handball, ice hockey, in-line skating, martial arts, rugby, skateboarding, skiing, skydiving, soccer, softball, squash, surfing, volleyball, weight lifting and wrestling.
The potential for sports-related injuries is an unfortunate fact of life for today's athletes and even the people who do their regular job.

Dental and facial injuries generally include broken, displaced or knocked out teeth (especially the front teeth), tears of the lips, broken jaws and damage to the jaw point. A blow to the chin or other part of the head can give rise to a concussion, an injury to the brain that can cause loss of consciousness, dizziness or more severe complication.
The two major goals in wearing a mouthguard are the following: One is to protect teeth against the impact of an object or body part. The second is to protect against concussions for example a crushing blow from an elbow.
Properly fitted mouthguards are recommended for all activities that require gear. They come in fun colors. Feel free and choose the colours you like the most! Parents that are active should encourage their children to wear mouth protection during their sport activities.
