Healty teeth need healty food...
Our body needs to eat a balanced diet so that it can get the nutrients needed for good health. Every day, your body renews itself, building new muscle, bone, skin and blood. If your diet is low in the nutrients which are needed by your body, your mouth may have a more difficult time resisting infection.
Please be aware that a poor diet can lead to gum disease and tooth decay. Foods high in carbohydrates, sugars can greatly contribute to the production of plaque acids that attack tooth enamel. Eventually, these acids can cause tooth enamel to break down, forming a cavity.
If you eat foods high in sugar we suggest to you to eat them during meals rather than between meals. We also suggest to avoid any foods that stick to your teeth as these can produce more plaque. Most meals already contain acid-producing ingredients, so the less you expose your teeth to these ingredients, the less plaque acids attack your tooth enamel.
Some foods may protect against cavities. Fluoride is a primary protector against dental cavities. Fluoride makes the surface of teeth more resistant to acids during the process of remineralisation. Drinking fluoridated water is recommended by some dental professionals while others say that using toothpaste alone is enough. It is known that milk and cheese are also rich in calcium and phosphate, and may also encourage remineralisation.
All foods increase saliva production, and since saliva contains buffer chemicals this helps to stabilize the pH to near 7 neutral in the mouth. Foods which are high in fiber may also help to increase the flow of saliva.
Try to use sugar-free chewing gum which stimulates the saliva production, and helps to clean the surface of the teeth.
Sugars are commonly associated with dental cavities. Other carbohydrates, especially cooked starches, e.g. crisps/potato chips, may also damage teeth, although to a lesser degree since starch has to be converted by enzymes in saliva first.
It is known that sucrose is most commonly associated with cavities.
In order to minmize cavities you should avoid sugar-containing foods and drinks to meal times. Each time you eat food containing sugars , your teeth are exposed to bacterial acids for 20 minutes or more.
These repeated acid attacks can break down the enamel surface of your teeth, leading to a cavity. If you must snack, brush your teeth or chew sugarless gum afterward.
